Clarifying Tree Care: Answers to Your Essential Tree Questions

Published On: January 18th, 20243 min read

Trees, the majestic elements of our landscapes, provide shade, aesthetic appeal and ecological advantages. However, their maintenance is often a complex challenge. Questions arise, such as the appropriate distance for planting them from a residence, the right time for pruning, and the considerations for their removal. This guide aims to clarify the five most perplexing aspects of tree care, presenting insights to foster a flourishing tree-human relationship.

How near to my house can I plant a tree without it becoming intrusive?

Answer: Consider a large maple whose shadow falls directly across your living room window, disrupting the desired ambiance. To prevent such occurrences, a fundamental rule is to plant trees at a minimum distance from your house equal to their expected mature height. For instance, a tree that will reach 30 feet in height should be planted no closer than 30 feet from your home. This spacing ensures the tree’s health without imposing on your living space or the structural integrity of your home.

Is it necessary to prune a tree when its foliage becomes overgrown?

Answer: Trees, like humans, occasionally need pruning, but the timing is crucial. Most trees are best pruned in late winter or early spring during their dormant period. This timing promotes rapid healing and reduces the risk of disease transmission. Nonetheless, certain species may have specific pruning timelines, and unique health issues might require a different approach. When unsure, consulting with an arborist is advisable, as they can determine the best pruning schedule for your tree’s health. Learn more about tree pruning

How can I tell if my tree is sick?

Answer: Trees are prone to diseases and health issues like humans. Signs of distress include discoloration of leaves, early leaf drop, and brittle bark—other indicators, like an abundance of dead branches or an unusual leaning, signal potential problems. If you suspect your tree is unwell, seek advice from an arborist who can diagnose the issue and suggest a treatment plan.

How much water does my tree need?

Answer: Young trees require more frequent watering as they establish their root systems, akin to young children. Mature trees have varying water needs, influenced by species and local climate conditions. Generally, thoroughly watering every few weeks, particularly during dry periods, is advisable. For specific guidance, consult an arborist to understand your tree’s unique watering needs.

Is it safe for me to remove a tree myself?

Answer: Professionals should generally handle tree removal, particularly for large or complicated jobs. Arborists have the necessary equipment and expertise and adhere to safety protocols, ensuring a safe and efficient process while reducing risks to property and personal safety. Therefore, if you consider removing a tree, it is safest to consult with an arborist.

We had three huge trees cut in our yard. Arbortech went above and beyond completing the work per their quote. Left the yard clean from debris and sawdust. They even moved a squirrel nest with babies in it to a different tree.

Lindsey, Justin, and the ARBORTECH crew are amazing. We had a large maple on a rocky hillside with some challenges that included being close to the house, propane tank, plantings, and hot tub with limited walking access only. Every branch, limb, and log had to be lowered and carried away by hand. The crew arrived on time and was professional, communicative, and hard working. After the final sweep by the team, the area looked perfect and undisturbed- minus one large tree. We have used ARBORTECH four different times and have consistently been impressed. It is clear that they care and are attentive to our needs.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the job ArborTech did from start to finish! Justin, the owner and arborist, came out quickly to quote the job of removing a tree, grinding the stump and shaping/pruning 4 other maple trees. Santos and Alex, along with Justin, came out the next week and they completed the job with great precision and care. Of particular note, Santos and Alex took a lot of time to ensure my grass, driveway and street were clean of debris throughout the day, and at the end, you couldn’t tell they were even here other than their beautiful results. It is apparent that ArborTech is a highly professional, skilled, and knowledgeable team that takes pride in what they do!

The A-team came through for my tree removal. They were fast, very organized, safe and aware of their surroundings. They did a great job with the stump removal. They left my property cleaner then when they arrived. The price was perfect for what they did. Also removed all wood and left me some woodchips. Thank you.
