Yes! We Offer Stump Grinding Services Too

From head to toe – so to speak – we’ve got you covered with your tree removal services!

No one wants an unsightly stump left in your front yard. They are difficult to mow around, cause tripping hazards, and can take away from the aesthetic of a nicely kept lawn.

Here are some reasons to consider stump grinding as a homeowner:

  • It is less invasive than stump excavation or removal.
  • It is quick and efficient – which means cost effective!
  • There is minimal disturbance to the area surrounding the stump
  • Most importantly, you can fill the hole with topsoil and reseed grass to create a seamless lawn.
  • After a growing season, you would never even know a stump was there.

Stump Grinding FAQs

What’s the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Stump grinding uses a machine to grind the visible stump and upper root flare down below ground level, while full stump removal pulls the entire stump and root system out of the ground. Grinding is faster, less invasive to the surrounding lawn, and more affordable, which is why most Connecticut homeowners choose it over full excavation. Arbortech offers stump grinding.

How much does stump grinding cost in Connecticut?
Stump grinding cost depends mainly on stump diameter, the number of stumps you have, root accessibility, and whether you choose the Grind & Go or Full Stump Removal Package. Larger stumps and tight access (near fences, sheds, or septic lines) typically add time and cost. Because every property is different, we provide free, no-obligation estimates so you get an exact price before any work begins.

How long does stump grinding take?
Most residential stump grinding jobs are completed in under an hour per stump, though larger stumps, dense root systems, or multiple stumps on one property can extend the timeline. Our crews carry commercial-grade grinding equipment, which allows us to work efficiently without sacrificing a clean finish.

Will grass grow back over the ground stump?
Yes. Once the stump is ground down and the hole is filled with topsoil, most homeowners can reseed and have a seamless lawn within a single growing season. This is one of the biggest advantages of grinding over leaving a stump in place, since you get your usable yard space back instead of working around a dead tree remnant.

What happens to the roots after grinding?
Stump grinding removes the stump and the major root flare near the surface, but it doesn’t extract the deeper root system underground. Those remaining roots naturally decompose over the following years and won’t send up new sprouts once the stump itself is gone. This is different from a live tree’s roots, which can persist and cause issues if the tree wasn’t fully removed first.

Do I need to worry about underground utilities before grinding?
Yes, and we take this step seriously on every job. Before grinding, it’s important to have underground utility lines marked so equipment doesn’t strike gas, electric, water, or septic lines. This is something Arbortech handles for their customers as a courtesy by requesting assistance from Call Before You Dig.

Can you grind a stump near my house, driveway, or septic system?
In most cases, yes. Our equipment is sized to maneuver through tight spaces, around structures, and over hardscaping, and we take extra care when grinding near foundations, driveways, septic systems, or underground utility lines. If a stump is in a particularly sensitive spot, we’ll assess it during your free estimate and let you know exactly how we’ll approach it safely.

What size stumps can you grind?
Arbortech’s grinding equipment handles everything from small ornamental tree stumps to large, mature hardwood stumps common throughout Tolland, Hartford, and Windham counties. Stump diameter and root density are the main factors that affect time and pricing, which is why we quote each job individually rather than using a flat rate.

Should I grind my stump or just leave it in the yard?
Leaving a stump in place creates a tripping hazard, attracts pests such as carpenter ants and termites, can sprout unwanted new growth, and occupies usable lawn space indefinitely. Grinding removes those risks, improves your yard’s appearance, and can even support your home’s curb appeal and resale value. For most homeowners, grinding is the more practical long-term choice over leaving a stump to decay naturally, which can take many years.

Do you clean up the debris after grinding?
It depends on the service you choose. We typically offer a “Grind & Go” service, where the debris is left on-site, which some homeowners use as mulch elsewhere in their yard. Occasionally we are able to offer “Full Service Stump Removal”, where we haul away the debris and backfill the hole with topsoil, leaving the area ready for reseeding. We’re happy to talk through both options and set clear expectations before we start.

What time of year can stump grinding be done?
Stump grinding can be done nearly year-round in Connecticut, including fall and winter under most conditions, since the ground doesn’t need to be worked as it does for planting. The main exception is when the ground is frozen solid or saturated from heavy snow. If you’re planning to reseed afterward, spring and early fall tend to be the best windows for grass to establish.

Is Arbortech licensed and insured for stump grinding in Connecticut?
Yes. Arbortech Tree Services has operated in Connecticut since 2005 and holds both a CT arborist license (S-6872) and a Home Improvement Contractor license (HIC.0651213). We carry full insurance on every job, which protects your property and gives you peace of mind when heavy grinding equipment is operating near your home.

We had three huge trees cut in our yard. Arbortech went above and beyond completing the work per their quote. Left the yard clean from debris and sawdust. They even moved a squirrel nest with babies in it to a different tree.

Lindsey, Justin, and the ARBORTECH crew are amazing. We had a large maple on a rocky hillside with some challenges that included being close to the house, propane tank, plantings, and hot tub with limited walking access only. Every branch, limb, and log had to be lowered and carried away by hand. The crew arrived on time and was professional, communicative, and hard working. After the final sweep by the team, the area looked perfect and undisturbed- minus one large tree. We have used ARBORTECH four different times and have consistently been impressed. It is clear that they care and are attentive to our needs.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the job ArborTech did from start to finish! Justin, the owner and arborist, came out quickly to quote the job of removing a tree, grinding the stump and shaping/pruning 4 other maple trees. Santos and Alex, along with Justin, came out the next week and they completed the job with great precision and care. Of particular note, Santos and Alex took a lot of time to ensure my grass, driveway and street were clean of debris throughout the day, and at the end, you couldn’t tell they were even here other than their beautiful results. It is apparent that ArborTech is a highly professional, skilled, and knowledgeable team that takes pride in what they do!

The A-team came through for my tree removal. They were fast, very organized, safe and aware of their surroundings. They did a great job with the stump removal. They left my property cleaner then when they arrived. The price was perfect for what they did. Also removed all wood and left me some woodchips. Thank you.
