Why Should You Hire a Licensed Arborist?

Arborists are tree care professionals who are trained in all aspects of woody plant health care. Arborists are required to be licensed with the State of Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection through a series of educational courses and testing. After receiving licensure, an arborist must maintain a certain level of continued education in order to stay up to date with the latest developments in tree care, treatment, and biology.

An Arborist’s main task is to help their customers with overall assessment, maintenance, care, and removal of trees and shrubs. They are typically able to perform the tasks they prescribe such as tree removal, pruning, cabling, anchoring, and more.  An arborist may also make suggestions about treatment for insects, soil fertility, and other aspects of plant health.

In the state of Connecticut only companies with licensed arborists are authorized to make assessments regarding the health of a tree. You must also be a licensed arborist in order to trim, cable, and/or otherwise treat a tree to improve a tree’s condition.

Poor pruning cuts completed by a company without an arborist on staff can be detrimental to your trees and may ultimately result in a greater expense for tree removal down the road.

Licensed arborists and their staff have undergone extensive training to ensure that your pruning is done properly. These techniques include making proper pruning cuts that take place outside the branch collar to ensure the tree can effectively heal from the wound. An arborist will also take into account the age of the tree, whether it is affected by other adverse conditions, and the time of year, before making suggestions about what to prune.

If this consideration is not taken, improper pruning practices could result in severe damage or decline to your tree.

In the long run it is best to ensure your tree care is completed by a company with a licensed arborist on staff who is overseeing daily operations. We have seen more than our fair share of poor pruning cuts!

When speaking with a company to set up an initial site visit, ask if they have a licensed arborist on staff overseeing the company’s tree care procedures.  If the company has a licensed arborist they will be able to provide you a license number given to them by the State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Arborist Services — Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What arborist services does Arbortech offer?

At Arbortech, our arborist services include on-site risk hazard assessments, pruning and structural care, cabling and bracing to reduce risk, and guidance on tree removal when necessary. Our licensed arborist reviews your entire landscape and helps you develop a long-term maintenance plan — not just a one-time fix.

Q2: Does Arbortech have a licensed arborist on staff?

Yes. Arbortech has a licensed arborist on staff who oversees all tree care operations. Our arborist license number is S-6872, issued by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP). You can verify any arborist’s credentials through the CT eLicense portal at elicense.ct.gov or search the Connecticut Tree Protective Association directory at ctpa.org.

Q3: What towns does Arbortech serve?

Arbortech serves homeowners and property managers across Tolland, Hartford, and Windham counties, including Coventry, Tolland, Ellington, Vernon, Mansfield, Andover, Bolton, Willington, Ashford, Columbia, Hampton, Chaplin, Glastonbury, South Windsor, Manchester, East Hartford, and more. If you’re not sure whether we cover your area, give us a call at 860-777-8902 — we’re happy to let you know.

Q4: Do I really need a licensed arborist, or can any tree company handle my trees?

In Connecticut, the law is clear: only companies with a licensed arborist on staff are authorized to assess a tree’s health or perform work intended to treat or improve its condition — including pruning, cabling, and bracing. Hiring an unlicensed company for this type of work isn’t just a legal gray area; it can cause real damage. Poorly made pruning cuts without proper training can leave trees vulnerable to disease and decay, often leading to more expensive removal down the road.

Q5: What’s the difference between a tree service company and a licensed arborist?

A tree service company can perform physical labor such as cutting and hauling, but only a company with a licensed arborist is qualified under Connecticut law to diagnose tree health problems, recommend treatments, and perform care work. Licensed arborists must pass state-administered exams through CT DEEP and complete continuing education to maintain their credentials. This training ensures they understand tree biology, disease identification, proper pruning techniques, and structural risk assessment in ways that general labor crews are not required to.

Q6: How do I verify that an arborist is licensed in Connecticut?

You can verify any arborist’s Connecticut license in two ways: search the CT DEEP eLicense portal at elicense.ct.gov/Lookup/LicenseLookup.aspx, or use the Connecticut Tree Protective Association’s arborist finder at ctpa.org/find-arborist. When getting quotes, always ask for the company’s arborist license number — a legitimate company will provide it without hesitation. Arbortech’s license number is S-6872.

Q7: What happens during an arborist consultation with Arbortech?

When we visit your property, our technician walks the site with you, evaluates the condition and structure of your trees and shrubs, and listens to your goals and concerns. We look for signs of disease, pest activity, structural weakness, or root issues, and we explain what we find in plain language. From there, we put together a plan that fits your priorities and budget. There’s no pressure — we’re here to give you the information you need to make smart decisions about your landscape.

Q8: What are signs that I should call an arborist?

Common warning signs include dead or dying branches, unusual leaf discoloration or early drop, cracks or splits in the trunk or major limbs, fungal growth (mushrooms or shelf fungi) at the base of a tree, leaning that has worsened over time, and root damage from construction or soil compaction. In Connecticut, property owners should also be alert to threats like beech leaf disease, emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly, and spongy moth — all of which an arborist can identify and help you address before damage spreads.

Q9: Does Arbortech offer free estimates for arborist services?

Yes — we offer free on-site estimates. Give us a call at 860-777-8902 or use our online estimate request form to schedule a visit. We serve most of Tolland, Hartford, and Windham counties, and we’ll come out to assess your property at no charge.

Q10: Is Arbortech insured?

Yes, Arbortech is fully licensed and insured. In addition to our CT DEEP arborist license (S-6872), we hold a Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor license (#HIC.0651213). Before hiring any tree care company, always ask for proof of both licensing and liability insurance — it protects you as the property owner if something goes wrong during the job.
