The Do’s and Don’ts of Mulching Your Trees

Published On: June 27th, 20252.6 min read

When done correctly, mulching is one of the simplest yet most beneficial tree care practices. At Arbortech, we believe in combining best-in-class arborist knowledge with practical guidance for Connecticut homeowners. Here’s how to mulch like a pro.

Do: Choose the Right Mulch

  1. Opt for organic materials like wood chips, bark, compost, or aged arborist chips—they insulate, conserve moisture, improve soil structure, and enrich soil fertility.
  2. Avoid non-organic or dyed mulches near trees, as they can retain excess heat or leach unwanted chemicals into the soil.

Do: Apply the Proper Depth & Coverage

  1. Spread mulch 2–4 inches deep. More isn’t better—too much can smother roots.
  2. Extend mulch to the tree’s drip line, or at least a 4–5 foot circle, to protect roots and maximize moisture retention.

Do: Keep the “Mulch Donut” Intact

  1. Keep mulch 2–4 inches away from the tree trunk to avoid “volcano mulching,” which can trap moisture and attract pests or diseases.
  2. Expose the root flare—pull mulch back so the tree’s base is visible and can breathe.

Do: Refresh Annually & Monitor Soil Health

  1. Rake and renew mulch yearly to prevent matting and compaction, blocking air and water.
  2. Check soil drainage before applying thick layers—on poorly drained ground, keep mulch thinner (around 2 inches).

Don’t: Overmulch or Pile Too High

  1. Avoid thick mulch piles, which can promote fungal growth, rot, and root suffocation.
  2. If the root flare has been buried, it may require careful excavation to prevent long-term harm.

Don’t: Use Inappropriate Materials

  1. Don’t use fresh grass clippings or whole leaves, which can form dense mats and repel water.
  2. Keep mulch away from foundations and siding, where it may invite termites or rodents.

Don’t: Skip Seasonal Timing

  1. The best times to mulch are spring (after the last frost) and fall (insulating roots before winter).
  2. Mulch applied to moist, weed-free soil helps prevent weed growth and locks in hydration.

We had three huge trees cut in our yard. Arbortech went above and beyond completing the work per their quote. Left the yard clean from debris and sawdust. They even moved a squirrel nest with babies in it to a different tree.

Lindsey, Justin, and the ARBORTECH crew are amazing. We had a large maple on a rocky hillside with some challenges that included being close to the house, propane tank, plantings, and hot tub with limited walking access only. Every branch, limb, and log had to be lowered and carried away by hand. The crew arrived on time and was professional, communicative, and hard working. After the final sweep by the team, the area looked perfect and undisturbed- minus one large tree. We have used ARBORTECH four different times and have consistently been impressed. It is clear that they care and are attentive to our needs.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the job ArborTech did from start to finish! Justin, the owner and arborist, came out quickly to quote the job of removing a tree, grinding the stump and shaping/pruning 4 other maple trees. Santos and Alex, along with Justin, came out the next week and they completed the job with great precision and care. Of particular note, Santos and Alex took a lot of time to ensure my grass, driveway and street were clean of debris throughout the day, and at the end, you couldn’t tell they were even here other than their beautiful results. It is apparent that ArborTech is a highly professional, skilled, and knowledgeable team that takes pride in what they do!

The A-team came through for my tree removal. They were fast, very organized, safe and aware of their surroundings. They did a great job with the stump removal. They left my property cleaner then when they arrived. The price was perfect for what they did. Also removed all wood and left me some woodchips. Thank you.
